The black-capped kingfisher is a tree kingfisher of tropical Asia from India east to China, Korea and Southeast Asia, the most northerly of its group. It is resident over much of its range, but northern populations migrate and winter south of their range in Sri Lanka, Thailand, Borneo and Java. It is about 28 cm long, with purple-blue wings and back, a black head and shoulders, a white collar and throat, rufous underparts and a coral-red bill (Wikipedia, general species account).
It is mainly found in coastal and mangrove habitats but can sometimes be found far inland. The species has no subspecies. The 2012 National Red List gives no status under this name.
