The grey-bellied cuckoo, or Indian plaintive cuckoo, is one of the smaller cuckoos at about 23 cm. Adults are mainly grey with a white lower belly and undertail and a white wing patch. Some females are dark-barred reddish brown above with strongly barred whitish underparts. It breeds from India and Sri Lanka to south China and Indonesia and prefers light woodland and cultivated areas (Wikipedia, general species account).
It is a brood parasite that uses warblers as hosts and lays a single egg, and feeds on insects and caterpillars. Birds at more northerly latitudes and higher ground are summer visitors, moving to warmer areas in winter. It is noisy, with a persistent, loud pee-pip-pee-pee call. The 2012 National Red List gives no status under this name.
