Basic stats

Range

Peak Wilderness Sanctuary and Pidurutalagala Forest Reserve

Size

Males 30-35mm, females 40-45mm snout-vent

The Kandyan dwarf toad is a high-altitude Sri Lankan endemic known from only a few places. There was no record between 1872 and 2009, when it was rediscovered in the Peak Wilderness Sanctuary (announced in June 2012), and another population was reported in 2014 from the Pidurutalagala Forest Reserve. Males measure 30 to 35 mm and females 40 to 45 mm. Its long parotoid glands separate it from Kelaart's toad (Wikipedia, general species account).

The back is yellowish-brown with a redder head, a tiny gold stripe down the spine, and chocolate to dark brown parotoid glands, with black and gold dots on the lips and a gold belly. Adenomus dasi, a partly webbed form once described as a separate species, is no longer recognised as distinct. Nationally Critically Endangered (Sri Lanka National Red List 2012).
