Forests of India and Sri Lanka

The Malabar trogon is found in the forests of India, mainly the Western Ghats, hill forests of central India and parts of the Eastern Ghats, and of Sri Lanka. It eats insects and is not migratory, though it may move seasonally in response to rain. The sexes differ. The male has a slaty-black head and breast with a white border separating the black bib from a crimson underside, and an olive-brown to chestnut back, while in the female the crimson is replaced by ochre (Wikipedia, general species account).

It utters low, guttural calls audible only at close range and perches still under the forest canopy, often facing away, so it is easy to miss despite its colour. The bill is bluish, as is the skin around the eye. Nationally Near Threatened (Sri Lanka National Red List 2012).
