Breeds in northern Europe, the Palearctic and North America; winters south to the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia

The northern shoveler is a common, widespread duck that breeds in northern Europe, across the Palearctic and over most of North America. It winters in southern Europe, the Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia, Central America, the Caribbean and northern South America. No living subspecies are recognised (Wikipedia, general species account).

It was moved to the genus Spatula after a 2009 study found the old genus Anas was not a natural group. Only range and taxonomy were readable for this entry, so no description or behaviour is given. The 2012 National Red List gives no status under this name.
