Basic stats

Habitat

Deep oceanic water, recorded at 1,500-3,200m

Pantropical spotted dolphins ranked second by numbers on the 2003 offshore survey, with five groups totalling about 253 animals. They were found at depths of 1,500 to 3,200 m on the west, northwest and southeast of the island, in line with the species' preference for offshore water (de Vos et al. 2012).

Past surveys and catch records place them off Puttalam on the northwest, and off the southwest, south, east and northeast coasts. Twice, groups of Fraser's dolphins were seen associating with Risso's or pantropical spotted dolphins, an association reported before elsewhere (de Vos et al. 2012).
