Pseudibis papillosa
Habitat
Plains, farmland and cities; dry fields more than water bodies
Range
Indian subcontinent
The red-naped ibis, or black ibis, is a large, long-legged black bird with a long down-curved bill, found on plains, farmland and in cities of the Indian subcontinent. The wings and tail are black with a blue-green gloss, the body brown, with a white shoulder patch and a bare head topped by a triangular patch of red warty skin. The iris is orange-red, and the bill and legs turn reddish in the breeding season (Wikipedia, general species account).
Unlike other ibises in the region it is often found in dry fields rather than at water, and usually in pairs or loose groups. It is mostly silent but calls loudly at dawn, dusk and when nesting. It nests high in large trees or palms, and increasingly on mobile phone and power towers. The 2012 National Red List gives no status under this name.
