Males 33-43mm, females 59-71mm
The saddled tree frog, Taruga eques, is endemic to the central hills of Sri Lanka and is a large frog, with males 33 to 43 mm and females 59 to 71 mm. It is also called Gunther's whipping frog, the spurred tree frog and the montane hourglass tree frog. Albert Gunther described it in 1858 as Polypedates eques, and it has since moved through Rhacophorus and back to Polypedates before the genus Taruga was set up in 2010 by a team led by Madhava Meegaskumbura (Wikipedia, general species account).
Taruga is treated as a sister genus to Polypedates. Nationally Endangered (Sri Lanka National Red List 2012).
