The Sri Lanka frogmouth is a small, nocturnal relative of the nightjars found in forest in the Western Ghats of south India and in Sri Lanka. It is about 23 cm long, with the broad hooked bill, slit-like nostrils and forward-facing eyes typical of frogmouths, and plumage like dried leaves. The male is grey-brown with fine barring and a spotted crown; the female is more rufous. Sri Lankan females may lack, or have reduced, crown markings (Wikipedia, general species account).
It roosts quietly on branches, which makes it hard to spot, and each bird has a favourite roost it uses regularly unless disturbed. Its distinctive call is usually heard at dawn and dusk. Nationally Least Concern (Sri Lanka National Red List 2012).
