Habitat
Freshwater and wetland environments
Range
Eurasia
The wood sandpiper is the smallest of the shanks, a group of mid-sized, long-legged waders that largely use freshwater and wetlands. It looks like a longer-legged, more delicate green sandpiper, but with a shorter, finer bill, a brown back, longer yellowish legs and a smaller, less contrasting white rump patch (Wikipedia, general species account).
Its closest relatives are the common redshank and the marsh sandpiper, and it has no subspecies. The 2012 National Red List gives no status under this name.
