Endemic to Sri Lanka

The black-capped bulbul, or black-headed yellow bulbul, is a bulbul endemic to Sri Lanka. It is virtually crestless with a yellow throat and brownish eyes, yellowish green above and yellow below, with a brownish tail ending in a white tip. The male has red irises and the female brown. Its calls include a broad repertoire of sweet, mellow, minor-key piping whistles and sharper notes (Wikipedia, species account).

It was considered the same species as the black-crested, ruby-throated, flame-throated and Bornean bulbuls until 2008, and was moved from Pycnonotus to Rubigula after a 2017 study. It was described from a Sri Lankan bird illustrated by Peter Brown in 1776. Nationally Least Concern (Sri Lanka National Red List 2012, listed as Pycnonotus melanicterus, Black-crested Bulbul).
