Chrysopelea ornata
Range
South Asia and Southeast Asia
The golden tree snake, or ornate flying snake, is a mildly venomous, rear-fanged colubrid of South and Southeast Asia. Like other snakes of its genus it can glide from tree to tree in a controlled 'falling' flight, mainly while pursuing prey, and also to escape predators such as birds or other reptiles. Three subspecies are recognised. The species name ornata is Latin for decorated, referring to its ornate colouring (Wikipedia, general species account).
Its Sinhala names include pol-mal-karawala and malsara. Its striking looks and gliding have made it sought after in captivity. Nationally Vulnerable (Sri Lanka National Red List 2012).
