Chamaeleo zeylanicus
Diet
Insects
Habitat
Mostly arboreal
Range
India south of the Ganga, southeastern Pakistan and parts of Sri Lanka
The Indian chameleon is found across much of India south of the Ganga, southeasternmost Pakistan and parts of Sri Lanka, widely separated from all other chameleons. It moves slowly with a bobbing, swaying motion and is usually arboreal. It has an extremely long sticky tongue for catching insects from a distance, tong-shaped feet, a prehensile tail and independently moving eyes. Its colour changes are mainly for communication with others of its species rather than for matching its background (Wikipedia, general species account).
It is one of the few chameleons outside Africa and its nearby islands. Nationally Endangered (Sri Lanka National Red List 2012).
