Microhyla mihintalei
Habitat
Shady places near streams, lowland dry zone
Range
Lowland dry zone of Sri Lanka
Size
Males 21.7-27.3mm, female 24.4mm snout-vent
The Mihintale red narrow-mouthed frog is endemic to Sri Lanka and is named after Mihintale. It was once thought to be Microhyla rubra, but morphological differences led to the Sri Lankan populations being raised to a new species. Males measure 21.7 to 27.3 mm from snout to vent and the single female in the type series 24.4 mm. The back is light reddish-brown with a faint grey band from behind the eye to the groin and two narrow black streaks from the snout to the groin (Wikipedia, general species account).
It is confined to the lowland dry zone and mostly prefers shady places close to streams. The 2012 National Red List predates the split and has Microhyla rubra as Nationally Least Concern, without a separate entry.
