Nagao's pug-snout frog is endemic to Sri Lanka and known from the Central, Sabaragamuwa, Southern and Western Provinces. It is named after Eijiro Nagao, whose foundation has supported research on Sri Lankan amphibians. Males measure 26 to 30 mm from snout to vent and females 27 to 32 mm. It is dark brown with yellow spots near the eyes and on the upper lip and reddish-orange patches on the snout, back, belly, vent and limbs. Males have a visible vocal sac (Wikipedia, general species account).
Adults are terrestrial and arboreal and prefer lowland moist forest, with records from about 125 to 150 m. It appears to breed only in tree holes, where the tadpoles also develop. One female was found in a tree hole with eggs stuck to the wall above the waterline, which suggests parental care. The 2012 National Red List has it as Ramanella nagaoi, Nationally Endangered (Sri Lanka National Red List 2012).
