The osprey is a diurnal, fish-eating bird of prey with a cosmopolitan range, found on every continent except Antarctica (in South America only as a non-breeding migrant). It is a large raptor, more than 60 cm long with a wingspan up to 180 cm, brown above and mostly greyish on the head and underparts. It nests near water that can supply enough food and hunts prey that is almost entirely fish (Wikipedia, general species account).

It is the only living species in its genus and family, though some classifications place it with the hawks and eagles. The 2012 National Red List gives no status under this name.
