The rufous-bellied eagle, or rufous-bellied hawk-eagle, is a bird of prey of forested regions of tropical Asia. It is small for an eagle and contrastingly patterned like a falcon. It was earlier placed in Hieraaetus and sometimes Aquila, but was thought distinctive enough for its own genus, Lophotriorchis (Wikipedia, general species account).

Two subspecies are recognised with no marked plumage difference: the nominate kienerii of India and Sri Lanka, in which northern birds are larger, and formosus, widely distributed across the rest of the range. Nationally Near Threatened (Sri Lanka National Red List 2012, listed as Hieraaetus kienerii).
