The pin-tailed snipe breeds in northern Russia and spends the non-breeding season in southern Asia from Pakistan to Indonesia. Wikipedia calls it the most common migrant snipe in southern India, Sri Lanka and much of Southeast Asia. It is 25 to 27 cm long, mottled brown above with cream lines down the back, with a long straight dark bill, short greenish-grey legs and a streaked buff breast (Wikipedia, species account).
It resembles the common snipe but has a shorter bill and tail, less pointed wings and no white trailing edge, and a flatter flight when flushed. It forages in mud or soft soil for insects and earthworms, and is found in wetlands, sometimes drier ones than the common snipe. The 2012 National Red List gives no status under this name.
