The rain quail, or black-breasted quail, is a small quail of the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia, with a range that includes Sri Lanka. It measures 15 to 17 cm and weighs roughly 64 to 71 g. The male has a black breast patch and a distinctive black-and-white head pattern; the female is hard to tell from female common and Japanese quail, though its breast spots are more delicate (Wikipedia, general species account).
Its call is a metallic, repeated pair of notes given morning and evening, and at night in the breeding season. It is no longer thought to have subspecies. The 2012 National Red List gives no status under this name.
