The Sri Lanka junglefowl is endemic to the island and is its national bird. The sexes differ strongly. The male, much the larger, has orange-red body plumage, dark purple to black wings and tail, golden feathers on the mane, bare red facial skin and wattles, and a red comb with a yellow centre. The female is dull brown with white patterning on the lower belly (Wikipedia, general species account).

It is closely related to the red junglefowl, the wild ancestor of the domestic chicken, and even more closely to the grey junglefowl. Studies cited on Wikipedia found signs of its genes in domestic chickens. The species name honours the Marquis de La Fayette. Nationally Least Concern (Sri Lanka National Red List 2012, listed as Gallus lafayetii).
