Central and southern India; lowlands of southeastern Sri Lanka
The painted francolin is a francolin of grassy areas in central and southern India and, according to Wikipedia, the lowlands of southeastern Sri Lanka. It resembles the female black francolin but has no rufous hind collar, instead showing a bright rufous face and throat. The underside is spotted white, the legs are orange-yellow to red and lack spurs, and it is more arboreal in habit than the black francolin (Wikipedia, general species account).
Where it overlaps with the black francolin in the north of its range the two are said to hybridise. Three subspecies have been named. Nationally Critically Endangered (Sri Lanka National Red List 2012).
