Endemic to Sri Lanka, absent only from the far north

The red-backed flameback, also called the lesser Sri Lanka flameback, is a woodpecker endemic to Sri Lanka and absent only from the far north. It has been treated as an endemic species since the time of Legge, but was later lumped as a subspecies of the black-rumped flameback and then restored to full species by a study of Seneviratne, Irwin and Fernando (Wikipedia, species account).

That study found it hybridises with the black-rumped flameback in a zone north of a line from Trincomalee to the base of Puttalam lagoon and south of a line from Mullaitivu to Mannar, and that hybrids do less well than pure birds. It is the only red-coloured Dinopium. The 2012 National Red List has no entry under this name; it lists the Black-rumped Flameback (Dinopium benghalense) as Least Concern, which probably covered this form (verify).
