Endemic to Sri Lanka

The crimson-backed flameback, or greater Sri Lanka flameback, is a woodpecker endemic to Sri Lanka. It and the greater flameback were both formerly treated as subspecies of the buff-spotted flameback. Nigel Collar (2011) noted that it differs from the greater flameback in its crimson rather than golden upper body plumage, yellow rather than black beak, weaker supramoustachial stripe and less noticeable, spotty eyebrow stripe (Wikipedia, species account).

The 2012 National Red List has no entry under this name; it lists the Greater Flameback (Chrysocolaptes lucidus) as Least Concern, which probably covered this form before the split (verify).
