The brown-capped pygmy woodpecker, or Indian pygmy woodpecker, is a very small woodpecker found across most of India, Nepal and Sri Lanka. It is non-migratory and often seen in pairs or small family groups, very active in the tree canopy but not often noticed. It is a small brown and white bird with a brown cap, barred brown-and-white upperparts, dirty-white streaked underparts, a white-spotted tail and distinctive pink-rimmed white irises. The crown of the male is edged red (Wikipedia, general species account).
It forages in pairs or mixed-species flocks, gleaning and probing wood for small invertebrates and also taking nectar and fruit, and nests in tree cavities. Its call is a weak, rapid rattle on a rising scale. Nationally Least Concern (Sri Lanka National Red List 2012, listed as Dendrocopos nanus).
