Habitat
Rocky substrates and low tree trunks; sometimes thatched huts and cowsheds
Range
Western Ghats of India and Sri Lanka (Knuckles, Sabaragamuwa, Eastern Province)
The rough-bellied round-eyed gecko, or rough-bellied day gecko, is found in the Western Ghats of India and in Sri Lanka. It is active by day, with a distinct head, elongated snout and keeled ventral scales. The dark brown back has transverse light and dark variegations, the underside is pale brown or cream, and the sides carry spiny tubercles. Males have two to four pre-anal and three to six femoral pores (Wikipedia, general species account).
Live populations were rediscovered in Sri Lanka in 2016, nearly 120 years after earlier records, at a low elevation of 50 to 80 m in the wet zone. It is also known from the Knuckles, Sabaragamuwa Province and monsoon forest in the Eastern Province. It is diurnal and crepuscular and sometimes enters thatched huts and cowsheds. Nationally Data Deficient (Sri Lanka National Red List 2012).
