The spot-winged thrush is an endemic resident breeder in Sri Lanka, 21 to 23 cm long and about 70 g. Adults are light brown above with a double wing bar of white spots, a pale face with two dark bars, white underparts with heavy spotting, a black bill and yellow legs. The song is a rich, varied whistling, and young birds have buff streaking above (Wikipedia, species account).
This uncommon species breeds in hill rainforest and, less often, drier woodland at 500 to 2,000 m, and winters at 750 to 1,500 m. It is generally solitary and secretive, favouring dense undergrowth and bamboo clumps. It nests in a tree fork, raises two broods a year and eats far more insects than fruit. Nationally Vulnerable (Sri Lanka National Red List 2012, listed as Zoothera spiloptera).
