Lonchura malacca
Range
Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and southern China; introduced to the Caribbean
The tricoloured munia is a finch native to Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and southern China, and introduced in the Caribbean, including Trinidad, Jamaica, Hispaniola, Puerto Rico, Cuba and Venezuela. It has been called the black-headed munia, like the chestnut munia, from which it was split. Immatures have pale brown upperparts, lack the dark head of adults and have uniform buff underparts that can be confused with other young munias (Wikipedia, general species account).
Adults have brown irises, pale bluish-grey bills and grey legs. The species name malacca is a geographical misnomer, since it does not occur on the Malay Peninsula. It has no subspecies. Nationally Least Concern (Sri Lanka National Red List 2012).
