The Asian brown flycatcher is an insect-eating flycatcher that breeds in Japan, eastern Siberia and the Himalayas and is migratory, wintering in tropical southern Asia from southern India and Sri Lanka east to Indonesia. It is 13 cm long including the cocked tail, similar to the larger spotted flycatcher but longer-tailed, with a relatively large, broad-based dark bill (Wikipedia, general species account).

The adult has grey-brown upperparts and whitish underparts with brown-tinged flanks; young birds are scaly brown. It is common in open woodland and cultivated areas. Some authors treat Indian subcontinent birds as a separate subspecies, poonensis, which is paler and browner. The 2012 National Red List gives no status under this name.
