The western reef heron, or western reef egret, is a medium-sized, mainly coastal heron found in Africa and parts of Asia. It has an all-white morph and a dark grey morph, plus intermediate forms. The white morph looks like a little egret but has a larger, yellower bill, thicker yellow legs and a very active foraging style, sometimes using a wing to shade the water. The grey morph has a whitish throat (Wikipedia, general species account).

Some authors treat it as a subspecies of the little egret because the two may hybridise. The 2012 National Red List gives no status under this name.
