Vanellus malabaricus
Habitat
Dry stony and open grassland or scrub
Range
Dry plains of peninsular India and the Indian subcontinent
The yellow-wattled lapwing is a lapwing of the Indian subcontinent, found mainly on the dry plains of peninsular India. It is dull grey-brown with a black cap, yellow legs and a triangular wattle at the base of the beak. It has a sharp call and fast flight, and does not migrate but makes seasonal movements in response to rain (Wikipedia, general species account).
Its nest is a scatter of tiny pebbles holding well-camouflaged eggs, and the chicks leave the nest shortly after hatching and follow their parents to feed. Nationally Least Concern (Sri Lanka National Red List 2012, listed as Vanellus malarbaricus, a misspelling).
