The grey-headed fish-eagle is a fish-eating raptor with a dark brown upper body, grey head, lighter underbelly and white legs, smallish but quite bulky, with a small bill, a small head on a long neck, a rounded tail and long talons. It is 61 to 75 cm long. Females are heavier, 2.3 to 2.7 kg against about 1.6 kg for males. Juveniles are paler with darker streaking (Wikipedia, general species account).
It is often confused with the lesser fish eagle and Pallas's fish eagle. Wikipedia says it is often called the tank eagle in Sri Lanka because of its fondness for irrigation tanks. Nationally Near Threatened (Sri Lanka National Red List 2012, listed as Ichthyophaga ichthyaetus).
