The greater flamingo is the largest and most widespread flamingo, common in the Old World: in coastal North Africa and sub-Saharan Africa, the Indian subcontinent south of the Himalayas, Central Asia, the Middle East and southern Europe. Wikipedia lists coastal Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka among its southern Asian range. It was once thought to be the same species as the American flamingo but differs in the colouring of its head, neck, body and bill (Wikipedia, general species account).

The most northerly breeding populations are in central Kazakhstan. It has no subspecies. The 2012 National Red List gives no status under this name.
