Sphaerotheca breviceps
Size
Averages about 6.4cm snout-vent (2.5 inches)
The Indian burrowing frog is stout, with a short head, rounded snout and a swollen back of the skull. It is light brown or olive above with darker spots or marbling, often with a light band down the spine. The inner metatarsal tubercle on the hind foot is very large, sharp-edged and shovel-shaped, which lets it burrow. Males have blackish throats and two internal vocal sacs. It averages about 2.5 inches from snout to vent (Wikipedia, general species account).
It is found in South Asia, in the drier regions of India from the Punjab and Sind to southern India and Sri Lanka, and in Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal and Myanmar. Nationally Least Concern (Sri Lanka National Red List 2012).
