The pallid harrier is a medium-sized harrier that breeds on open plains, bogs and heathland in southern parts of eastern Europe, central Asia and Iran and winters mainly in India and southeast Asia, in open country. Adults are 40 to 48 cm long with a wingspan of 95 to 120 cm. Males weigh about 315 g and the slightly larger females about 445 g (Wikipedia, general species account).
The male is whitish grey above and white below with narrow black wingtips, and is smaller, narrower-winged and paler than the hen harrier. The female is brown above with white upper tail coverts, so females and juveniles are often called ringtails, and she is very like a female Montagu's harrier but has a paler belly and a well-defined facial pattern. The 2012 National Red List gives no status under this name.
