Geokichla wardii
Diet
Forages on leaf litter
Habitat
Forest floor below undergrowth
Range
Breeds in the central Himalayan forests; winters in hill forests of southern India and Sri Lanka
Size
22cm
The pied thrush breeds in the central Himalayan forests and winters in the hill forests of southern India and Sri Lanka. Males of this 22 cm thrush are conspicuously black and white: mostly black above with a long white eyebrow, white tips to the wing coverts, tertials, rump and tail, and white underparts with black flank spots, and the bill and legs are yellow. Females and young have the same pattern but in browns, with scalier markings below (Wikipedia, general species account).
Like many thrushes it forages on leaf litter below forest undergrowth and flies into trees when disturbed, then sits still, which makes it hard to locate. The species name honours Samuel Neville Ward, a colonial administrator in India who supplied the first specimen to Jerdon. The 2012 National Red List gives no status under this name.
