The Sri Lanka wood-pigeon is endemic to the island's mountains, where it is found in primary montane forest, generally above 910 m (3,000 ft). It is 36 cm long, with dark grey upperparts and tail, lilac head and underparts that pale on the belly, and a black-and-white chessboard pattern on the nape (Wikipedia, species account).
It nests in damp evergreen woodland in the central highlands, building a stick nest in a tree and laying a single white egg. Most of its food is vegetable. It is normally silent but gives an owl-like hoo call in the breeding season. Wikipedia says it can be seen fairly easily in the woods of Horton Plains National Park. Nationally Vulnerable (Sri Lanka National Red List 2012).
