Agamids & Horned Lizards

Ceratophora ukuwelai

Basic stats

Habitat

Thick leaf litter in dense forest patches

Range

Endemic to Salgala Forest, Kegalle District, Sri Lanka

Ukuwelas' rough-horn lizard is an agamid described in 2020 from a female specimen collected in Salgala Forest, Kegalle District, and named for the herpetologist Kanishka Ukuwela. It is found in thick leaf litter on the forest floor in dense patches of forest. It is sister to the rough-nosed horned lizard, and some taxonomists have suggested it might be better treated as part of that species (Wikipedia, general species account).

The describing study recommended a Critically Endangered classification because of the small range, low encounter rates and ongoing habitat loss. Listed threats include habitat loss and fragmentation, roadkill, thermal stress on highway asphalt and invasive species. No national Red List category was found.
