The white wagtail is a small passerine that breeds across most of Europe and Asia and parts of North Africa, with a toehold in western Alaska. It is resident in the mildest parts of its range and otherwise migrates to Africa. There are between 9 and 11 subspecies. It is an insectivorous bird of open country, often near habitation and water, preferring bare ground where it can see and chase prey, and in towns it forages on paved areas such as car parks (Wikipedia, general species account).
It nests in crevices in stone walls and similar natural and man-made structures. It is the national bird of Latvia. The 2012 National Red List gives no status under this name.
