Range

Eastern and Southeast Asia; hills of tropical southern Asia from eastern Afghanistan to southern China, the Ryukyu Islands and Indonesia

The ashy drongo is widely distributed across eastern and Southeast Asia, with several populations that vary in shade of grey, migration and the size or presence of white patches around the eye. The adult is mainly dark grey with a long, deeply forked tail, and young birds are dull brownish grey. It breeds in the hills of tropical southern Asia, and many northern populations are migratory (Wikipedia, general species account).

The Indian subspecies longicaudatus is very dark, almost like the black drongo but slimmer with a longer, less splayed tail, a crimson iris and no white spot at the bill corner, and it favours taller forest. A Himalayan population winters on the Indian peninsula. The 2012 National Red List gives no status under this name.
