Calidris falcinellus
Range
Breeds in northern Scandinavia, Russia and Siberia; winters from East Africa and India to southeast Asia
Size
16-18cm
The broad-billed sandpiper is a small wader, 16 to 18 cm long, slightly smaller than a dunlin but larger than a little stint. Its bill is longer and straighter than a dunlin's, with the tip distinctly kinked down, and its legs are shorter. Breeding adults have dark brown upperparts with narrow pale fringes, white underparts with blackish breast markings, a pale crown stripe and a distinctive split eyebrow (Wikipedia, general species account).
Two subspecies are recognised: falcinellus breeds in northern Scandinavia and northwest Russia and winters in East Africa, the Middle East and India, while sibirica breeds in Siberia and winters in southeast Asia. The 2012 National Red List gives no status under this name.
