The glossy ibis is the most widespread ibis, breeding in scattered sites in warm regions of Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia and the Atlantic and Caribbean regions of the Americas. The name comes from words meaning sickle, for the shape of the bill. It is migratory, with most European birds wintering in Africa, but it is resident in western India, and birds from other populations may disperse widely after breeding (Wikipedia, general species account).

The 2012 National Red List gives no status under this name.
