The plain prinia is a small warbler, 13 to 14 cm long, resident from Pakistan and India to south China and southeast Asia. It has short rounded wings, a longish tail, strong legs and a short black bill. Breeding adults are grey-brown above with a short white eyebrow and rufous fringes on the closed wings, with whitish-buff underparts. The sexes look alike (Wikipedia, general species account).
It is a skulker of wet lowland grassland, open woodland, scrub and sometimes gardens, and it nests in a shrub or tall grass, laying three to six eggs. The endemic Sri Lankan race keeps its summer plumage, with the shorter tail, all year. The song is a repetitive tlee-tlee-tlee. Nationally Least Concern (Sri Lanka National Red List 2012).
