The tawny-bellied babbler is a small babbler, 13 cm long including its long round-tipped tail, that forages in small groups in low scrub forest. It is dark brown above and orange-buff below with a rufous-grey crown and stiff feathers on the forehead. There are three subspecies on the Indian subcontinent: the northern and eastern one is uniformly brown below, while the western peninsular one has a white throat (Wikipedia, general species account).
The Sri Lankan population, phillipsi, is also white-throated but paler underneath with a larger, heavier bill. Nationally Least Concern (Sri Lanka National Red List 2012).
