Orthotomus sutorius
Habitat
Open farmland, scrub, forest edges and gardens
Range
Tropical and subtropical Asia
The common tailorbird is a songbird of tropical and subtropical Asia, a common resident of urban gardens, and shy and usually hidden in vegetation though its loud calls are familiar. It has a long upright tail, greenish upper plumage and a rust-coloured forehead and crown. It gets its name from its nest, made by piercing the edges of a large leaf and sewing them together with plant fibre or spider silk to form a cradle for the real nest (Wikipedia, general species account).
Kipling made it Darzee in The Jungle Book. Two subspecies are listed for Sri Lanka, sutorius and fernandonis. Nationally Least Concern (Sri Lanka National Red List 2012).
