The Indian courser is a ground bird of mainland South Asia, mainly on the plains bounded by the Ganges and Indus river systems. It is found in small groups foraging for insects in dry, open semi-desert country. It overlaps with the similar cream-coloured courser but is brighter, with a broader black eye-stripe starting at the base of the beak, a chestnut crown and a rufous breast (Wikipedia, general species account).

It has a dark black patch on the nape where the white stripe meets, and a white rump in flight. It has no subspecies. Nationally Critically Endangered (Sri Lanka National Red List 2012).
