Pycnonotus luteolus
Habitat
Dense scrub
Range
Southern India and Sri Lanka
Size
About 20cm
The white-browed bulbul is a resident breeder in Sri Lanka and peninsular India, found in dense scrub where it skulks in the vegetation and is hard to see, though its loud, distinctive burst of calls gives it away. It is about 20 cm long, olive-grey above with whitish underparts, a white eyebrow, a white crescent below the eye and a dark eye-stripe and moustache. The vent is yellowish (Wikipedia, general species account).
The sexes look alike. It is more often heard than seen, singing a rich, spluttering warble from the top of a bush before diving into cover. The Sri Lankan subspecies, insulae, is slightly darker with a shorter wing. Nationally Least Concern (Sri Lanka National Red List 2012).
