The white-rumped munia, or white-rumped mannikin, is a small waxbill finch, not a close relative of the true finches or sparrows. It is native to tropical continental Asia and some adjacent islands and has become naturalised in parts of Japan. Its domesticated descendant is the society or Bengalese finch, kept worldwide as a pet and lab organism (Wikipedia, general species account).

The species was described from a specimen that Brisson thought came from Réunion but which is now assumed to have come from Sri Lanka. Six subspecies are recognised. Nationally Least Concern (Sri Lanka National Red List 2012).
