Males have elongated central tail feathers and either black and rufous or white plumage, while females are short-tailed with rufous wings and a black head (Wikipedia, general species account).

It feeds on insects, including grasshoppers, butterflies, praying mantises and flies, usually catching them in the air, then killing them by hitting them on a rock and eating the inner parts. Nationally Least Concern (Sri Lanka National Red List 2012).
