The Oriental magpie-robin is a small passerine, now considered an Old World flycatcher, found across most of the Indian subcontinent and parts of Southeast Asia and common in urban gardens as well as forests. It is 19 cm long including the long tail, which is usually held cocked upright when hopping on the ground. The male is black above with a white shoulder patch and white underparts and tail sides; the female is greyish black above and greyish white below (Wikipedia, general species account).

It is well known for its song and is popular as a cage bird. The Sri Lankan race is ceylonensis, in which females are nearly identical to males in shade. It is the national bird of Bangladesh. Nationally Least Concern (Sri Lanka National Red List 2012).
