South Asia east to Burma; introduced elsewhere

The red-vented bulbul is a resident breeder across South Asia extending east to Burma. It has been introduced in many other parts of the world and is established in Argentina, Tonga, Fiji and parts of Samoa, the USA and the Cook Islands. In New Zealand it was the target of a successful eradication campaign in 1955, though birds are still sporadically reported (Wikipedia, general species account).

It was described from a specimen Brisson wrongly believed came from the Cape of Good Hope, and the type location was later changed to Sri Lanka and then, in 1952, to Pondicherry. Nationally Least Concern (Sri Lanka National Red List 2012).
